June Benefits and Wellness Newsletter

Hello June! Let the sunshine in your life this month!

This month invites us to reflect on the health challenges men face and to promote habits that support better physical and mental well‑being. It’s also a meaningful moment to check in with the men in your life—including yourself—to make sure everything feels on track.

Key areas NOT to overlook are:

  • Mental Health
  • Yearly Physicals
  • Preventive Screening (Prostate, Testicular, Colorectal, & Cardiovascular)

Some facts regarding Men’s Health Month:

  • Data shows that men’s average lifespan is about 5 years shorter than women’s.
  • Heart Disease: The leading cause of death for men in the U.S accounting for about 1 in every 4 male deaths.
  • Cancer: 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men
  • Diabetes: Men are more likely than women to have undiagnosed diabetes making regular blood glucose screening crucial.
  • Mental Health: Men face a significantly higher risk of suicide compared to women.

During PTSD Awareness Month let’s make it a point to bring it to light! A time when we come together as a collective force to raise awareness of PTSD and Complex-PTSD. By promoting awareness, sparking conversations, and extending unwavering support, we can create a world where the effects of trauma are met with empathy, understanding, and healing. National PTSD Awareness Day is observed annually on June 27.

Things to keep in mind of PTSD:

  • 8% of the population will experience PTSD
  • Women are more likely PTSD sufferers
  • Big T and Small t Types of trauma
    • There are two types of trauma: Big T is any type of trauma that has occurred due to a life-threatening situation like wars, natural disasters, physical assault, etc. Small t is caused due to a disturbing event that is not life threatening like divorce, abrupt relocation, financial woes, etc.
  • Trembles are normal after trauma
  • PTSD is not just from personal experience
    • Many people can develop PTSD simply because they heard or witnessed someone else going through a traumatic event.

If you or a loved one want more information on PTSD, please look over Lyra flyer.
